Empowering the Next Generation: iyai X Cardozo High School’s TransSTEM Academy

In an inspiring event that highlighted the importance of education and technology, iyai visited longstanding national partner Cardozo Education Campus’ TransSTEM Academy to deliver a special gift to its graduating students. Dr. Beverly Scott accompanied iyai board members, Buffie Purselle, Vice Chair and Dr. David Purselle in a gesture that was more than just about technology—it symbolized opportunity, empowerment, and belief in the next generation of STEM leaders: Buffie personally donated laptops to the graduating class of 2024, along with iyai’s $1500 donation to their Dress for Success support program for their Academy graduates.

Cardozo’s TransSTEM Academy has long been a beacon for students passionate about transportation, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The 1st public transport academy in Washington DC, established 33 years ago, Cardozo equips students with the foundational knowledge and skills to succeed in industries critical to the country’s infrastructure and future growth. Cardozo TransSTEM is led by Director Cheryl Rodgers and Principal Arthur Mola, and iyai is proud to have had Cardozo as the site of our first pilot program.

By fostering a hands-on learning environment, the Academy encourages curiosity and innovation, helping students bridge the gap between education and real-world application However, access to quality technological tools can be a significant barrier. The COVID-19 pandemic further underscored the digital divide, making access to personal devices a necessity for educational and professional success.

In Dr. Scott’s address to the graduating students, she emphasized the importance of STEM careers in shaping the future of American infrastructure. She shared her journey, encouraging students to remain resilient in the face of challenges and to seize every opportunity to innovate within the fields of transportation and infrastructure.

These young graduates will now prepare to step into the next phase of their lives as they pursue their studies and also work towards the future of American infrastructure and society.
